Position Summary

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites candidates to apply for a tenure track faculty position in Meteorology at the assistant professor level. This is a nine-month faculty contract beginning in Fall 2024. MSU Denver is a predominantly undergraduate, public, urban, minority-serving institution in the heart of downtown Denver. MSU Denver values its identity as a teaching-focused institution.

The vibrant and diverse EAS department is home to eleven tenured faculty and three lecturers across four degree granting programs in Geography and GIS, Environmental Science, Geology, and Meteorology. The department houses a bachelor's degree in meteorology, a minor in meteorology, and a minor in climate change, as well as several other majors and minors in the other programs. The professional concentration of the meteorology major fulfills the requirements for the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Service. The EAS department does not have graduate programs. The department has a dedicated Meteorology classroom and a meteorology computer lab with AWIPS and a weather wall. As a UCAR member, the program has close ties with the nearby National Center for Atmospheric Research. MSU Denver has a robust mentoring program for tenure-track faculty and this candidate would join a new GIS professor in the department and a cohort of incoming faculty in the Roadrunner Faculty Academy to set them up for success.

The successful candidate will teach 9-12 credits of undergraduate meteorology courses each semester, that includes Physical Meteorology, Thermodynamic Meteorology, Climatology, and introductory Global Climate Change courses. We prefer candidates who can integrate modern computer programming activities into some of their courses. The successful candidate will join two tenured meteorology professors and a talented group of part-time meteorology instructors who have a wide variety of expertise and flexibility in what they can teach. Therefore, in addition to our preference for someone to take on the Physical, Thermodynamics, and Climatology courses, the successful candidate has the option to teach Radar and Satellite Meteorology, Field Observations of Severe Weather, Weather Discussion, Weather and Climate Lab, Meteorology Research Seminar, Air Pollution, Mesometeorology, and more.

MSU Denver prides itself on offering our courses in a variety of modalities: in-person, asynchronous online; hybrid, and self-paced. The department's courses within our General Studies curriculum mostly involve Weather & Climate and Global Climate Change, although other options to teach General Studies Curriculum exist outside of the meteorology program, but still within the department (e.g. Oceanography, Physical Geography, Global Water Concerns, and science courses for future teachers).

In addition to teaching, the professor will be responsible for mentoring students through the program and onto their careers, contributing to service at the university, and maintaining scholarly activity. Our department guidelines for tenure can be accessed on our webpage.

Responsibilities

The duties of the position entail:

Teaching 24 credits per academic year, with potential for reassigned time in the first year to focus on professional development and establishing a research agenda (80%)
Advising and mentoring undergraduate students, engaging in scholarly activities and professional development, and service to the department, college, university, and/or community (20%)

Required Qualifications

Doctorate degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, or closely related discipline conferred by the start of the fall semester in August 2024
Demonstrated teaching experience in meteorology
Demonstrated ability to teach Physical Meteorology, Thermodynamic Meteorology, and Climatology
Demonstrated ability to teach introductory level Global Climate Change

Ability to integrate modern computer programming activities into teaching
Commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence
Evidence of ability to teach, or experience teaching in one or more of the following areas: Radar and Satellite Meteorology; Meteorology Research Seminar; Air Pollution; Mesometeorology; Field Observations of Severe Weather; Weather Discussion

Salary for Announcement

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $62,000 - $65,000 at Assistant Professor rank. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, education, experience, specialty and training. There is the possibility of supplemental pay for summer teaching, grants, and other course improvement participation projects. In addition, faculty in EAS are encouraged to apply for tenure as soon as they have fulfilled the minimum time required in position and met the department guidelines for tenure and promotion.
